Statement

Since 1996 my work has involved compositions using paint and collage and sound and video pieces which explore different methods of sound creation and employment.

Since 2006 I have combined these visual and aural practices to produce works which address personal and observed perceptions of sonic art in gallery spaces. I believe that sound based artworks can suffer in a gallery setting if the artwork does not provide a visual accompaniment to the sound. The artworks can also suffer if sounds are not effectively segregated or controlled and by making installations that are silent until the audience interact with them I address these issues.

I initially created the sounds required for my works with the use of analogue equipment and instruments. As my practice has developed I have also used computer technology as my art material, including microprocessors and sensors to promote interactivity. My current work is derived from the analogue realm and is both sculptural and interactive and exploits apparent 'failures' in analogue technology in order to develop its sonic aspect.

My video work can be inspired by humorous situations that occur in my everyday life. I have recently created video pieces which are inspired by personal recordings of conversations on the subject of religion and have developed into an investigation and celebration of the differences that exist between people. This area of my work is an ongoing project.
