Rab Harling is a photographic artist whose work investigates how we interact with the world around us and how we interpret our role within de facto societal structures. Primarily concerned with notions of happiness, his practice investigates ideological frameworks and infrastructures and the diminution of our status within them.
Inspired by his immediate environment, his practice is nomadic in nature and draws upon sources ranging from the urban landscape to sparsely populated deserts and concentrates upon our interaction with the space around us, and how we interpret our place within a system, whether ideological or metaphysical, in which our choices are constantly being affected by historical and political factors.
Employing a variety of photographic processes, from large format film to digital and low-resolution video, the underlying technical aspects of his work involve pushing each of the involved media to their limits, from extremely long exposures to giant site-specific installations, his work is always pushing at the boundaries of a contemporary photographic practice.
