I went to art college for a year at the end of the 1970s but I fell out with my tutors because I was interested in photography and drawing. Kind of funny when you look at the way things turned out. But I never gave up taking pictures or drawing. The more you look, the more you see. Taking photographs is probably fundamental to the way I negotiate my way around.
I've carried at least one camera with me on a daily basis, with a few pauses here and there, for over 25 years and most days I've taken photographs. I wouldn't describe myself as a photographer because I am less and less sure what a photographer actually is any more with the developments in digital and the widespread uptake of online sharing sites from flickr to LightStalkers. When I was young a photographer was a professional who hung around at weddings or at the sea front in places like Torquay.
I'm interested in light. I'm interested in the things you can do with it it on film, with pixels and without a camera at all. I'm interested in the way some light remains after it's hit the medium. I'm interested in the various machines and tools I use. I like chemicals, enlargers, ink jet printers, photo etching, gum bichromate and other stuff. I'm not interested in projects. The photographs I take are dictated by the equipment I'm using and I've got a lot of equipment or the printing technique I want to use and I always want to know more.
