My practice is currently exploring the dynamics of psycho geography in relation to art historical reference, through mixed media site specific installation. The theoretical impetus of this discourse is based upon the notion that the relation of the individual to social space is one in which aspects of the everyday can become overlooked, and therefore seem irrelevant. The work proposes a reassessment of our everyday surroundings, and a reconsideration of their influence and prominence. The reorganising of groups of objects within a given space, allows new relationships, and therefore meanings to be expanded. The importance and interplay between memory and association can also be explored. New narratives emerge, as the metaphoric potential of object and place is re-examined and reordered.
The essential composition of the work is therefore dictated by a reaction to objects and space.
Therefore the main area of research will be a questioning of meaning itself, as the work proposes that meaning, context and narrative, are in a state of flux.
The role of the contemporary artist is to force a reassessment of the everyday. My practice highlights overlooked aspects of the everyday, in order to isolate and represent aspects of the urban environment, with the aim of forging a visual poetry of the commonplace, to elevate the irrelevance of the ordinary.
