I began my artistic journey as a painter. However, by the time I reached my early twenties I found myself more drawn towards three dimensional work. I had always been intrigued by the ancient art of stone carving; so, when the opportunity presented itself I began exploring the use of this chalenging medium. When I carve stone, I feel a connection to the rich history of this artform; especially when I'm using the traditional hand tools such as the mallet and chisels. However, I also enjoy the use of modern pneumatic power tools.
I like to carve stone because of its inherent natural beauty; there are so many colours, textures and patterns to choose from. Some of my favorite types are marble, alabaster and pyrophyllite. I like the permanence and durabality of natural stone; my creations have the potential to endure for thousands of years and will hopefully connect me to future generations.
Like most artists, I find my inspiration in the natural world. Some of my favorite subjects include marine life, reptiles and amphibians and the human form. I am also interested in ancient and sacred symbols. I often incorporate circles, spirals, yin/yang and the figure 8 symbol for infinity, into my carvings. However, some of my work is purely abstract or organic in nature.
In the future, I aspire to increase the scale of my work... my goal is to eventually create monumental marble sculptures for public spaces. I would also like to take my work in a more classical direction, in emulation of the great sculptors from antiquity, the baroque, neoclassical and romantic periods.
