I consider myself to be a collagist, and in the simplest terms all of my work can be seen as an extension of collage. I am fascinated by the act of reconstructing things that already exist, in three as well as two dimensions. I am intrigued by simple single units that can be reproduced. this reproduction is sometimes cellular-like, where elements organically change through corruption, and at other times it is focused on isolated components of a bigger structure.
I work in a variety of media from large constructions and installations to paint, digital and photographic work. because of this variety I have created LustrousChemistry as a canister to contain the many facets of my work. LustrousChemistry is a precise description of the content of my work. as with a more conventional chemistry that involves the reaction caused when two chemicals are mixed, I am interested in the placing of disparate objects within a space and observing the way in which they react to one another. my observations are informed by the meaning these objects hold as well as misconceptions, slip-ups and double-entendres related to them.
my practise is concerned primarily with colour and space and I enjoy angular and eclectic conversations with texture and form. contrast and conflict informs my use of materials and I like to work as much with the feminine warmth of fake-fur, textiles and embroidery as I do with the masculine austerity of building materials such as wood, plaster and paper.
I am attracted to the radiance, sheen and more importantly to the dark lustre of certain materials. I am not necessarily interested in expensive things but I’m intrigued by how gloss, shine and vibrant saturated colour can transform mundane things into objects of desire. I like to explore the way we construct our lives and live behind facades; facades that are exaggerated to glossier extremes in popular culture, fashion and pop music.
I have a firm sense of balance, a balance that relies on the equal and opposite pull of extremes. I hold true punk ethics which I like to temper with arts & crafts sensibilities. I am engaged by ideas, aspirations, and connections; spurred on by the bombardment of conflicting thoughts, theories and suggestions; delayed by caprice and whim and energized by substance and sum. above all I am in awe of the beauty of how things fit together.

Bio
Paul Hearn was born in ashford, kent in 1968. except for a brief spell at maidstone college of art in 1987, he is self-taught. since 2006 Paul has worked as LustrousChemistry on many diverse projects and continues to create artwork which displays a warm emotional intellect. taking inspiration as much from literature, history and science as he does from shopping malls, corporate architecture and the latest technology, he is inspired to continue with this autodidactic trajectory.
Paul has a long standing love affair with pop music preferring vocalists who cannot sing and compensate for their lacking vocal talent with swagger and bravado. he has a keen interest in what can be loosely termed psychedelia and immerses himself in eclectic, underground and outsider music. although unable to play an instrument himself he has worked closely with a number of musicians on a variety of projects. he is also a regular contributor to www.themixtapeclub.org, an organization dedicated to the art of the mixtape.
Paul is a fan of net art which he believes encourages intangibility and illustrates the ephemeral nature of art in general. he uses his net art site www.fandminusf.com and various other networking sites to promote dialogue with art and artists on an everyday basis.
Paul is very interested in how the general public relate to contemporary art and is compelled to tackle the complexities that surround the promotion of intelligent ideas to a wide audience. he is also a core team member of 2nd Birthday, who strive to increase the impact of contemporary art in and around bournemouth by placing unusual art in unusual places.
Paul is emotionally affected by graphic design and spends as much time as professionally viable in cinemas.
