Death is omnipresent, yet nowhere. Death is inevitable, yet society chooses to hide it away from the public view. Since the late 1990s my art has involved a variety of themes associated to death. My creative output has ranged from the general subject of death to more specific topics such as capital punishment, representations of death and mortality, and memento mori. As an artist I am inquisitive about the subject of mortality and work with the notion of challenging taboos that surround it. My art deals with both the hidden and visible spaces that surround death. Whilst using found objects associated to death, I transform everyday objects to give an association of death. I use a variety of outputs for my practice; I primarily create installation-based pieces, with the use and incorporation of olfactory, sonic, film, photography, performance and site specificity. My art deals with communicating with an audience in order for the audience to obtain a meaning from my work. The work I create allows a space for reactions, evoking thought processes, whilst at times, can be confrontational and provoking. The subject of death is often combined with metaphors, which are present in the display of the work along with the media used. There is also a recurring depiction of the use of the colour black, which is, from my point of view, heavily associated with death and mourning along with the use of pure white, which evokes innocence, cleanliness and precision that correlates and contrasts to the subject.
