Color, Light and Space.
By Dominic Lutringer
Translation Stefen Frater.
I find that the essence of paintings is to be found in the simple elements: the color, the light and the shade, the space…As Braque said, the space which is between the apple and the plate must be painted with just as much care as the objects themselves. The balance of power between the objects and the space between them constitutes the real subject matter.
As an art collector, I am very interested in all the new media – video art, art installations etc., but recently it seems that art has turned into a kind of quick-fix entertainment, something conceived in haste, realized in haste and just as quickly forgotten. We live in the ‘now’ society. In reaction to this, I want to find time to think, time to genuinely create a painting, and time to contemplate on it. The question is therefore how can we work with color, canvas and brush and create timeless paintings in the midst of all this haste in the 21st century?
Recently I have been working on several series of pieces:
One is called ‘Objets’, in reference to Giorgio Morandi. I want to erase all the noise and elaborate decoration that too often disguises or hides the true essence of a painting, and return to honesty and simplicity in art. Just as a piece of music, or even a single sound, will generate an instinctive reaction in the listener, so I want to explore and exploit the same mechanism through painting. I want to explore the nature of this relationship, the ability to create an instinctive rather than a sentimental reaction through my work.
