I am primarily a sculptor, but I work with a range of techniques and media. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2010 and am currently studying for a masters in fine art in London.

My work explores fracturing - a destructive, perhaps violent, process that results in something incomplete, devalued and imperfect. It has multiple forms - physical breaking apart, psychological tears such as between fantasy and reality, or temporal ruptures across time.

My current work appropriates two photographs and collages them together. The older, black and white image is from an 1850's visiting card - staged poses and surroundings showing people in their Sunday best. Appropriated from modern-day Vogue, the second image shows the glossy, luxuriant, lush excesses of modernity and the current cultural imperative towards extraordinary perfection. Such excesses repel, even as they inextricably draw one in.

The older image provides the starting point. I'm drawn to it by a subtle air of defiance or intensity, transmitted in the gaze or angle of the woman’s head - understated, elusive. The more modern image echoes its spirit in some way, although the two are incapable of perfect match. Collaging recombines these two disparate elements into a new whole. The result - a temporal bridge – that stretches from the time periods of the original images, across the artist’s act of making, to the viewing experience in the now.

What does the new image I make offer? An invitation to consider the similarities and differences revealed by the disparate photographs? The opportunity to meet at the moment of fracture and move forward in conciliation and healing - to a position where intactness appears restored? An invitation to lay down one's gaze, promising to satisfy what can never be delivered, capable only of revealing lack?
