Cerbyd - meaning chariot

Artists will soon be travelling the length and breadth of Wales for inspiration and enlightenment; Wales has a diverse contingent of weird and wonderful groups, societies and organisations. The vehicle for this endeavour will be Cerbyd, driven by artists Tom Goddard and Brian Watkins.

Cerbyd is unique in its' aim to link artists with specialist community groups across Wales through travel, activity, collaboration and dialogue. The project will enable 10 selected artists to get to know one another while making creative responses to their country and the communities encountered.

Cerbyd is a journey where artists will visit community groups and join them in their activities over an 8 day period in August, from late night badger watching to bee-keeping and chess clubs to astronomy groups. Whatever the activities selected, they will certainly be diverse and interesting.

The group’s activities are all similar in their need for dedication, requiring prolonged study to develop and attain a level of expertise that demonstrates a similar rigour to that of the artist.

Cerbyd will offer artists the opportunity to share knowledge outside of a gallery system in order to open up a freedom for exchange that will consolidate and strengthen the ties between contemporary art practice and the wider community. The project aims to be a potential catalyst for engaging new audiences, for sharing networks to mutual advantage and for cross pollination of ideas and approaches for artists and community groups.

Artists are constantly on the lookout for new exciting opportunities, and this project will offer that in abundance. The trip is purposely an intensive experience so that deep and meaningful connections & dialogues are forged. The selected artists are sure to be a group who are both vibrant and passionate in debate but also organically open-minded in discussion.

It will be tiring. The project will test each individual in different ways due to the inclusive, all or nothing attitude of the project. I look forward to the ride and helping to make connections and being a catalyst for debate, collaboration and discussion.

Artistic developments from the project may be exhibited in a variety of ways, and are sure to convey passion and provide a window into that eight-day experience which will forever remain a document of the project.

Ideally the Cerbyd exhibition will tour around Wales to each region in the same way Cerbyd the collaboration will. There is also the possibility of showing the work in progress at the Eisteddfod in Ebbw Vale and streaming the project across the BBC Big Screens.
