Life can be likened to a movie shown only once to a captive audience of one, a darkened auditorium in which the level of illumination is a decision for the solitary occupant. To see the light we must first acknowledge that we are in the dark.

I am a reluctant human being and society is my confinement, a prison in which the inmates have been convinced that really they are free. My gaolers are troubled by their own shallows, the fears they have of others are the fears they have about themselves cunningly repackaged to increase their legal appeal.

Within my site responsive drawings, installations and objects, I am fascinated with the interplay between the spatial, conceptual, and architectonic conditions of a place. Through an accumulative means of building with utilitarian materials, industrial felt, paper towels, clothing, new and used hospital and bath towels, I make structures that address mass and void, line, weight, density, compression and expansion. Within these qualities, I find parallels in the physical and psychological states of the body, and the human condition.

The core of my painting practice explores topographical themes, and is concerned with the relationship between the natural and artificial environment. My most recent body of work, Strange Dichotomy, addressed the industrial archaeology of the Tamar Valley.
I am currently developing new work on the archaeology of Sardinia.

A continual dialogue of form and texture, tone and rhythm, I continue to seek a personal resolution, a natural but resting dialogue between myself and the viewer. Perhaps like a sculpture that is standing naked and listening to the audience as they walk around, voyeurisitic perhaps?. By exhibiting my first live and unfurling work Ivan "Unframed" ,(January 2011 Birdwood House, Totnes), the context of the gallery wrapped with the viewer, made the exhibition more vivid, being an experience for both of us.
