My favourite word is MADE. I would categorise my work as post-minimal; concerned with the act of making, with choice of materials and with the figurative, metaphorical nature of these things.

I trained as a musician and spent 10 years working in music and theatre. Over this space of time I found that my work became dominated by a need to be solid. Songs became poems, compositions became installations.

Chantal Powell creates objects and installations that powerfully and intimately explore the universal emotions that connect us.

My work is informed by a desire to understand how we position ourselves in the ‘real’ world, how we come to understand what we become aware of through our senses, how we contextualise and understand space and how these perceptions influence our ideas about humanity. There are two elements to my practice, painting and construction and whist they are on the whole separate strands only occasionally forming part of the same work, and each informs and influences the other.
