Let's face it, the world wouldn't stop turning if art didn't exist. Does art serve a purpose? And if so, what sort of purpose is this? Is art a functional essence to human survival or is is just a bit of decoration?
I think your question is really too general. 'Art' is a coverall word for many diverse actions, activities and genres operating in equally diverse contexts: instead, since we are a specifically contemporary art focused site perhaps we should be considering the purpose / functions of contemporary art?
