A guide to using ArtSelector in the form of common questions and answers. If you can't find your question answered below or have a technical problem please contact us.

The ArtSelector Contemporary Art Collective was originally set up by MA Fine Art graduates of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art.

ArtSelector is a free online contemporary art network which aims to support, promote and bring together critically engaged, contemporary art practitioners and viewers through an accessible online platform. ArtSelector provides a range of services including an innovative visual directory of international contemporary artists, independent curators and galleries.

ArtSelector is a non-profit organisation.

Register / login and using the menu tab at the top of the page go to:  My Account > Edit Account

Here you can adjust your basic account settings such as your registered email address, your account password, your notification settings and your locale / timezone.  You should also upload an image for your art profile here in the 'Picture' section.

Next, to add texts and links to your art profile page go to:  My Account > Art Profile

Fill in the various fields to add content to your art profile page.  Most fields are optional, but we recommend that you at least fill out the 'Basic info' section - including a statement detailing your practice / activities. The more information you provide about yourself the more your Art Profile page will appear in searches.

We also recommend that you fill in the Art Tags section - these will show up as clicikable links on your page, note: you must enter each Art Tag words separated by a comma, ie: sculpture, drawing, conceptual, otherwise they won't work properly.

To add images to your profile page you must be a member of the ArtSelector Contemporary Art Directory - ACAD.

You can only upload images to your Art Profile page if you applied and were accepted as an ACAD artist.  To apply for a place in ACAD see the guidelines here.

If your application was successful go to:

My Account  >  Art Profile

You will now find 3 image tabs: 'Images: top row', 'Images: middle row' and 'Images: bottom row'.  Here you  can upload, title and classify up to 15 images - 5 images per row (each image tab represents a row).  Start by uploading to the first image tab.  We recommend FIrefox, Chrome or Internet explorer browsers for uploading images.  Safari has a known bug which sometimes times-out when uploading large images. Note: each image must be in JPEG format and no larger than 512kbs. If you have larger images you will need to resize them first using an image editor like Photoshop. Also, your image filenames must not contain any weird characters (numbers and letters only) if they do - the uploaded image will not appear properly.

When you upload your images to each image tab please ensure that you provide a title for each image and also classify the images on each tab by using the classification options below the images. Using this system you can classify each image tab (row of 5 images) independently.  IMPORTANT: If you do not classify your image here they will not appear in future user searches!

When you have finished managing your uploaded images you must ALWAYS click the 'Submit' button at the foot of the page or your changes will not be saved.

Next - review your art profile page.   you may want to change the order of your images.

To change the order of your images: click on the images tab and use the 'Position' drop-down menu to select values for each image.  Images assigned lower values will appear before those assigned higher ones. Your first image will also appear in search results. To save your changes and update your images click the 'submit' button at the foot of this page.

In the first instance you should make sure that you have registered with ArtSelector and filled out your Art Profile page. To do this first register / login and using the menu at the top of the page go to:

My Account  >  Edit Account

Here you should upload your art profile page image and check your account settings. Next go to:

My Account  >  Art Profile

Here you will be able to provide your statement, education and training details and web links to examples of your work.  When you are happy with the way your profile page looks click on the 'Apply for ACAD' button and select either the 'Individual' or 'Gallery/Organisation' options - whichever is most appropriate - then click 'Apply'.

A place in the ArtSelector Contemporary Art Directory is completely free - but we are only able to accept professional contemporary artists and organisations who have a critically engaged practice / programme and are producing / exhibiting exceptional work. In this way we will build the very best international directory of contemporary art. Applications are reviewed regularly by our panel of contemporary art professionals and successful applicants are informed by email. If you do not receive notification of acceptance after 30 days you should assume that your application was unsuccessful. Our panel will only consider well presented and fully completed art profile pages - applicants with single line statements or missing profile pictures will not hold their attention and are unlikely to be accepted. For more details on our selection process please read this announcement.

Accepted artists will then find three image tabs on their art profile page through which they can upload, title and classify images of their work to be shown in the ACAD directory.

We are always on the look out for fresh, critically engaged contemporary art and regularly review art profile pages.  It's a good idea to make yourself more visible on the site by interacting on forums, starting your own group, submitting exhibition listings, reviews and other content.  When you login you will find a Create Content menu in the left hand navigation section and also at the top right of the Network page - use it!

By drawing attention to yourself our admissions panel is much more likely to notice you and your work!

You can check to see who has selected your Art Profile at any time by logging in to your artselector account and clicking on the 'My selectors' link in the left hand navigation menu on the Network page. You will also find this menu on many other pages - including this help page - but it doesn't appear on profile pages.

In this menu you will also find a link called 'My selected'. Clicking this will show you all of your currently selected Art Profiles.

ArtSelector is a site specifically for contemporary art. By this we mean art that is critically engaged and creating some kind of discourse.

Please read our terms and conditions of use page.
