Some You Win, Some Deleuze

22 January 2010 - 6:00pm - 29 January 2010 - 5:00pm

A group show by a selection of MA Fine Art students at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. It is the culmination of a month long project, ArtSpace 2010, which saw this group utilise the Factory, a previously industrial space on Camden High Street, as open studios, information hub and live art venue.

A group exhibition will invariably aim to achieve both balance and contrast, avoiding not only the formless sprawl but also the seamless continuum, and arrive at something malleable in the mind of the beholder. Thought is provoked by tension, clash, intermittent harmony, mood and tempo changes, and the odd surprise. A residency period requires the protagonists to engage their own intentions with that of the project as a whole, often pushing both individual and group in unexpected directions, perhaps off an intended course. While artists may often aim in the seeming direction of an ideal result or occurrence, stomping the ground between a comfort zone and the wilds may provoke the liveliest growth.

Where Gilles Deleuze had no net to catch his fall / leap, and obviously no wish for one, Yves Klein had his invisible Judo friends complete with tarpaulin. Plenty of others here to watch a leap / catch a fall, but if everyone is themselves leaping and falling? It's like one of those highland games where they chase the wheel of cheese down the hill, and every year a few bruises and twisted ankles if not a broken leg. Ah, the thrill of the chase. "But that's genuinely dangerous!" Any danger here? A potentially broken idea or bruised mind, perhaps. Some stomping of ground, certainly.
