Nil Desperandum
Knill House, St. Ives, Cornwall
12th - 24th December 2009
Nil Desperandum is an exhibition of contemporary art and historical artefacts exploring the legacy of John Knill and his family motto, Nil Desperandum.
Curators Sally Noall and Phil Rushworth are inviting proposals of contemporary works for the exhibition, the works selected will be displayed alongside the objects and artefacts of John Knill. Artists are free to interpret the title of the show and to incorporate any of the available John Knill information as they wish.
This former house of John Knill is located in the heart of St Ives, close to both the TATE and Millennium Galleries and only a short distance from the Newlyn Gallery and Penzance Exchange. This is an opportunity to take part in a curated exhibition that has strong links to the burgeoning contemporary art scene in Cornwall.
Artists are invited to put forward proposals for works inspired by or related to the legacy and family motto of John Knill, Nil Desperandum - translated from Latin as 'do not despair' or 'no need to despair'. Proposals may be for new works or existing works, and artists are free to interpret the theme and title of the show as they wish.
