rui sampaio
Saturday 10 September – Saturday 22 October 2011
private view/vernissage : Thursday 8 September 2011
Born in 1953, Rui Sampaio spent his childhood between Portugal and Africa, and toured Europe before settling in Paris in the 80s, where he took part in exhibitions in alternative spaces. Self-taught, his drawing has followed his travels, the chance encounters and literary discoveries. Small scale pieces and sketched fragments are reassembled and redrafted to invade the space of a notebook or a canvas ... The use of found objects of diverse materials allows him to create collages and paintings in which the figurative elements interact and seem to move. In the same way, the objects of his daily life, found in the street or at the dump, are assembled to create sculptures, sometimes painted, sometimes animated and ranging from the miniature to the giant.
The work of Rui Sampaio exudes a deep humanity.
