Issue 3: The Escape Edition

This month’s ArtSelector is looking towards the coming summer months with a nod to all our (be it modest) attempts to create portals of escape within our everyday lives.  We consider the ways in which artists explore means of escape and departure.

Jean Miro’: The Ladder of Escape is at the Tate Modern until 11 September 2011, this exhibition explores the wider context of Miro’s practice, highlighting his political engagement and examining the influence of his Catalan identity and the Spanish Civil War.

A different kind of escape is explored in Do Not Abandon Me, a collaboration between Louise Bourgeois and Tracey Emin.

Laura Bleach writes about this recent show in which Bourgeois made a series of works on paper and passed them to Tracey Emin to inscribe.  Both artists use repetition as a way to try to untangle and free themselves from their pasts.

Escaping the well trodden tourist path, filmmaker and artist Wim Wenders photographs Places, strange and quiet and Eve Sussman and Simon Lee’s new three screen work Wintergarden explores personal expression at Haunch of Venison.

This month we continue our ‘selected’ series profiling ArtSelector artists, here we are looking at the intricate and beautiful work of painter, ceramist and digital artist Julien Masson.
