study for a series of paintings

Ashes77's picture

painting, priestThis is among the studies that I have been uploading to my own blog, studio of ashes, where I have been posting some images for the past several years.
I haven't written much about these little paintings, much less about the big ones I am doing simultaneously, though a number of people have told me I should.

I am not sure what I saw or where, but - as I had a bunch of little canvases around with these triangular, "airplane tail" shapes already glued to the faces of them - well - converting the triangles into the red robes of these priestly guys seemed like the natural next step.
I am interested in the idea of a kind of aura or energy field that surrounds the body, basically down to the ground - but in each painting (or study really) that I've done, I've definitely needed to get those feet on the ground before the painting could really work. This one seems to have struck a chord with the people who have seen the series so far, though in fact, in looking at it - I can see that these feet may very well be the least on the ground of any I've done so far. Nevertheless, they seem to have taken off pretty well.

I don't make declarative statements with paintings, and I'd really prefer not to do so in the act of describing them either. But I suppose I have said something in the 15 or so paintings I have done in the last month - and the larger works have been saying something back to me too - which is perhaps what is really important.

You can see a few more from the recent work here, but perhaps if i can keep it together, I will post some more here as well.

Cheers
