There is always a different atmosphere in an exhibition where the work has been submitted by members of the public and lesser known artists.
It’s a bit like a student show. You dare not say anything negative just in case you’re stood next to the artist’s mother. Despite this, open exhibitions do encourage people to do just that; be open and talk freely about the works, as there is no expectation to like or understand them. read more »

Devolution, regression and return of human kind to a primordial state of chaos and potential are made a reality. A tumultuous, orgiastic bursting of horrific and sublime energy occurs as a by-product of this degeneration, demarcating a modicum of hope. A warped vision of regeneration, a weird sort of catharsis and cleansing that the three artists in ‘Sliding Down A Radiant Abyss’ elucidate with the use of painting, sculpture and film.

Hannah Rickards, winner of the 2007 - 2009 MaxMara Art Prize for Women, has completed her six-month residency in Italy, which was awarded as part of the Prize. The resultant work, expanded Whitechapel Gallery from 5 - 23 September 2009. The award, which promotes and nurtures UK based talent, is chaired by Iwona Blazwick, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery. MaxMara has chosen to work with the Whitechapel Gallery because of its wide reputation for championing women artists. read more »
